Dr. Lester and Dr. Owens are happy to offer clear aligners for our patients who want to discreetly straighten their teeth without the visible brackets and wires of braces. Many of our patients in Evanston, Wyoming have successfully used the Invisalign® clear aligner system to straighten their smile.
When you are investing time and energy wearing clear aligners for 22 hours a day, proper care is essential to support their integrity as they shift your teeth into place. Let’s take a moment to review the best way to care for your aligners to ensure their clarity and effectiveness.
What to do when you take them out: After you remove your aligners, rinse them with cold water to remove any bacteria accumulation and saliva buildup before you replace them on your teeth.
Avoid exposing them to heat: It is important to avoid cleaning your aligners with hot water. Heat can warp your aligners and consequently affect their integrity. This also means not running them through your dishwasher.
Cleaning your smile: Because you take your clear aligners out when you eat, you can brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before putting your aligners back in. Remove any food particles and oral debris which could promote bacterial growth.
Cleaning your aligners: You can safely clean your aligners with antibacterial soap, but rinse them well to remove any soapy residue before you put them back on. Note: toothpaste can scratch your aligners, making them more visible when you wear them, so avoid the temptation to use toothpaste when cleaning your aligners.
Sanitizing your aligners: While sanitizing with mouthwash seems like an effective way to remove germs, mouthwashes with green or blue coloring can tint the aligners and affect their invisibility. You can safely soak them in denture or retainer cleaner to avoid discoloration.
