Dental fillings are used to repair damage to the structure of a tooth. This can be caused as a result of tooth decay, wear, or trauma. After removing the portion of the tooth that is causing problems, Dr. Lester and Dr. Owens restore the tooth with one of several filling materials:
- Composite or “white” fillings are a good choice for small- to mid-size cavities because they provide durability and are resistant to fracture. They can be used on either front or back teeth. Composite fillings are the most natural-looking option.
- Amalgam or “silver” fillings are made from a combination of metals that include mercury, silver, tin, and copper. Amalgam is very durable and more affordable than composite or gold fillings.
- Gold fillings are composed of an alloy of gold, copper, and other metals. Gold has been used in dentistry for more than 1,000 years because it is so durable. Gold is more costly than amalgam and not natural looking like tooth-colored fillings.
