Dental Hygiene

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a degenerative condition primarily caused by bacteria found in plaque. The bacteria cause inflammation and infection in the gum tissues, and when left untreated, can eventually cause the gums to pull away from the teeth. Untreated periodontal disease can result in bone loss, tooth loss, and gum tissue recession.

Common symptoms of gum disease include the following:

  • Swollen, red or tender gums
  • Gums bleed easily
  • Loose teeth
  • Painful chewing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding gums that make your teeth appear longer than normal

It is vital to treat gum disease. Studies have linked the bacteria and inflammation in your mouth to heart attacks and dementia. In 2009, the American Academy of Periodontology and The American Journal of Cardiology released a paper on the relationship between heart disease and gum disease. Dr. Lester, Dr. Owens, and the hygienists at Bear River Dental are skilled and trained in detecting periodontal disease and are effective in helping you to receive treatment.

The treatment for gum disease is based upon your specific dental needs. Depending on the severity of the condition, our team may recommend additional professional dental cleanings, improved at-home oral hygiene, antibiotic treatment, scaling and root planing (deep cleanings), or gum surgery. We strive to help you restore your oral health and halt the progress of the disease.
